Was Hamlet in love with Ophelia?
When analyzing the character of Hamlet the main question which crossed my mind after completing the book was whether or not his relationship with Ophelia was truly genuine. Before Hamlet's confrontation with his father, although he was in a very depressive state, he was not in a manic state. It’s weird, because while every time Gertrude, and Claudius had a conversation, it always felt that Hamlet was always one step ahead of them, and knew what their game was. Every time he acted crazy, it was almost as if he understood how they would react, and they knew they would try to get to the bottom of it.
Even in the play he wrote to Ophelia it seemed very false, because when you compare the things Othello says to Desdemona, with the letter Hamlet wrote for Ophelia it seems that Shakespeare could have made the poem more romantic. He also was easily able to identity that Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern were working for the king and queen. Hamlet being the smartest, and most cunning character in the play, makes it seem that he is able to know the plans of others, which makes it so difficult to believe that he loved Ophelia. Even after she left him it feels as if it was very easy for him to move on, she was not in his mind, the nursery of Claudius was in his mind.
