Frankenstein Textual Analysis

Frankenstein is a 1823 novella which was written by author Mary Shelley. The novel circulated around a student scientist named Victor Frankenstein, and the struggles he faces while attempting to get rid of a creature he created through electricity. Throughout the novella the beast actually makes several attempts to make Victors life miserable, by attempting to make Frankenstein understand the feeling of loneliness. Victor’s family, who he adores, later become a leading target to the fiends malice. His hatred towards Victor was uprooted through Victor’s abandonment during the creations birth, and the beasts understanding of human nature, and his thirst for companionship. The necessity for companionship, which resides in all humans is also the main theme of the story that Mary Shelley tried to come across to her audience.

It should be noted that Shelley was born in 1797, to a feminist/philosopher mother who died while giving birth to Mary. Mary constantly made references to this in her other works, and a reference can even be found through Caroline Frankenstein, Victors mother who was token under his father’s wing after her father had died in her arms, and she was left a homeless beggar. It oftentimes speculated that Mary battled with lonlieness, this understanding only helped make the book feel more interesting, and original to me, especially since she wrote the book at 18 following a nightmare that she had.

I admire the story very much due to the clever, and original way it depicted the message she was trying to expose. It also reminded me of “Heart of Darkness”, due to it’s similar story-telling narrating style, which actually helped make be more glued into the book. Past adaptations have done a lot to help prolong the story legacy, however it has iconically been inaccurately represented many times.

Although, I love the story I do have to admit, I did not appreciate the way it concluded. The beginning of the story which depicted letters from Walton to his sisterhelped lead to the final conclusion. Only thing is I did expect a more climactic ending. I was expecting more of a showdown between Victor/Walton, and the fiend. The end left me dissatisfied due to it’s predictability, and the little importance it had to Walton’s storyline.
